Aretha Franklin, also known as the “Queen of Soul,” passed on Thursday morning due to pancreatic cancer at 76 years old. But there’s no doubt that her smooth jams and soulful voice left its mark on the world.
In honor of Franklin, we’re taking a look back at her legacy and how she changed the world with her powerful voice.
Paved the way for women in music
Franklin’s big break in the ’60s brought forth an empowering voice for women, more specifically, for women of color. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and her lyrics encouraged women to unapologetically be themselves in classic songs like Respect and Think.
Rocked her way to success
It’s no secret that Franklin filled the hearts of fans and music lovers alike. She became the first woman admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with 18 Grammy Awards, 88 Billboard hits, and more than two dozen Top 40 hits.
Created her own style
Franklin’s unique blend of R&B, gospel, and soul created a whole new sound unlike anything before. Her funky style continues to influence the music industry today including artists we know and love like Adele, Jennifer Hudson, and more.
