If you’re anything like us, you most likely have beauty products spilling out of your drawers. You can never have too many anti-aging potions or lipstick shades, right? But as we’re well aware, not all products are created equal — as in some are way more toxic than others.
But if you’re not a label reading ingredient pro, it’s hard to decipher the good from the potentially bad. And some companies go the extra marketing mile to fool consumers into thinking something’s really good, when it’s in fact really, really bad.
Taking the guessing work out of your next impulse beauty buy, Think Dirty, an app for your Smartphone, allows you to scan barcodes and type in product names when shopping. It has a whole easy-to-use rating system that will tell you all about the “dirty” ingredients in your products. Eek!
Anything from 0-3 means that the product does not contain any ingredients that have a documented potential health impact, which is what you should strive for. A rating of 4-7 means that the product’s ingredients have potential moderate long-term health effects, and anything from 8-10 means that they have serious negative long-term health effects and you should steer clear.
It’s actually mind blowing. Everyday items like Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder rank a 9 on the scale, which is frightening considering how many moms use it religiously on their babies. And since it’s Earth Month (and time for a good spring cleaning!), this app will come in handy and help you make better choices in the future. Pretty cool, right?
