Instagram’s newest update shows that the “Stories” feature wasn’t their only attempt at making Snapchat irrelevant.

The social media platform is now adding disappearing messaging features to Instagram Direct. Similar to Snapchat, users can now snap photos and videos (from the “Stories” camera), and send messages to other users which will disappear after the recipient views the message. Users will also be notified if their message was replayed or if they took a screenshot.

You can distinguish the disappearing messages with your standard direct messages by referring to outlines around users’ icons.

Instagram will also be adding a live video feature in the coming weeks, which you can also record with your “Stories” camera. There will be a “live” section for you to stream a video — it’s extremely similar to Facebook Live!
