If you’re looking to escape the monotony of the 24-hour news cycle and need a bit more politics, comedy, and scandal in your life, you need to watch these political movies. Plus, they’ll get you pumped for the November election!
Wag the Dog
What happens when you need to create a distraction over a presidential sex scandal? You create a war with Albania! Well, that’s at least the premise of Wag the Dog, a black comedy which features Dustin Hoffman.
Dave
If you’re looking for an enjoyable, comedic spin on politics check out Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver in Dave. Kevin Kline makes a switcheroo with the president, who he also happens to look like, and takes his place after the real president suffers a stroke.
Election
No one is going to stand in the way of Tracy Flick (a pre-Legally Blonde Reese Witherspoon) and her bid for class president. We’re talking sex scandals, poster sabotaging, and dozens of delicious “Vote for Flick” cupcakes.
Napoleon Dynamite
If you’re not sure who you’re voting for this election season, you can always pen in Pedro. Oh, and we’re not really sure why skits aren’t required of each U.S. presidential candidate, but we’d love to start a petition for one.
Air Force One
How can you forget the ultimate showdown between Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman? Watch the president kick ass and tell a terrorist to get off his plane.
The Candidate
Robert Redford is eye candy in this political movie and the movie begins with Redford running for an election he won’t win…or will he?
The Distinguished Gentleman
Thomas Jefferson Johnson (played by Eddie Murphy) gets elected because he has the same name as the former Congressman and is ready for Washington lobbyists to show him the money. In the meantime, he grows a conscience – and those don’t always work in Washington.
The American President
Long before Olivia Pope dated the President, Annette Bening caught the eye of Michael Douglas’ character, president Andrew Shepherd. This love story unfolds with the president romancing Bening’s character, who happens to be a lobbyist.
The Campaign
It’s Will Ferrell versus Zach Galifianakis in the comedy where the two comedians are vying for a North Carolina congressional seat. These two will do seemingly anything to get elected, and hilarity ensues.
Primary Colors
The thinly veiled story of President Bill Clinton’s first Presidential campaign is comedic at times, disillusioning at others. If nothing else, the movie will have you singing You Are My Sunshine over and over.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
This movie classic stars Jimmy Stewart as an idealistic man who stands up to the government through a passionate filibuster. The movie was directed by Frank Capra who also worked with Stewart on It’s a Wonderful Life.
