Oxidized jewelry is officially no longer a bad thing. In fact, so far in 2019, it’s proving to be quite the popular trend. So much so that, according to Pinterest, it’s up 1,112%, making it a top search for summer accessories.
Ready to hop on the oxidized jewelry bandwagon too? Check out everything you need to know about the trend below.
What is it?
If you’re unsure what oxidized jewelry is, think about a blackened silver or gold that creates a distinctive, antique look. “The surface of sterling silver is darkened most commonly through a chemical process using sulfur,” says Pinterest Insights Manager Swasti Sarna, also noting that any metal can be oxidized.
Why is it trending?
What once was considered something to be buffed off with one of those magical jewelry polishing cloths is now something to admire and flaunt. “We’ve seen a rise in antique looks, particularly in jewelry and furniture,” says Sarna. “Oxidized jewelry has an elegant antique look and looks great with bright summer colors. The metal often has intricate patterns, such as [a] delicate carving, and is actually very popular in Indian fashion.”
Should you wear it?
Thinking you might want to try the vintage look for yourself? Sarna says you can shop it directly on Pinterest by searching “oxidized jewelry” and sorting by product pins to shop brands big and small across different price points. If, on the other hand, you’re more of a DIY girl, you’ll be glad to know you can oxidize your own jewelry. “While oxidizing jewelry is best left to the professionals, there are a couple of easier at-home methods to achieve this look, including using boiled eggs or black gilders paste,” Sarna says.
