Scroll through Facebook and you’ll probably find tons of memes, viral videos, and news stories that you probably don’t want to see — which is why Facebook is making a change to your news feed.
The social media platform, which has over two billion users, announced on Thursday that they’re now going to prioritize what your friends and family share, like, and comment while scaling back on content from brands and media sites. In turn, they hope this will steer users from “passively consuming” content as Facebook researchers found that “passively reading articles or watching videos — even if they’re entertaining or informative — may not be as good” when compared to using social media to connect with people we care about.
Co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg also shared, “We feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren’t just fun to use, but also good for people’s well-being.” Check out his statement below:
Users should expect to see fewer posts from brands, news sites, celebrities, and more posts from friends throughout the next few weeks, which Facebook hopes will lead to more meaningful conversations and connections between friends and family.
