Place the taper candle in a stable holder that is designed to hold taper candles securely. Make sure the holder is placed on a flat, heat-resistant surface. Before lighting the taper candle, trim the wick to about 1/4" (0.6 cm) in length. This helps prevent excessive flickering and dripping. Use a long-reach lighter or match to light the taper candle. Hold the flame to the base of the wick until it catches fire. Avoid lighting the candle in a drafty area to prevent uneven burning. Keep an eye on the taper candle while it burns.
