We’ve all been there — you’re working on a project and you run into a creative rut. And the only thing worse than a creative block? Finding a way to get out of it.

Not sure how to get your creative flow back? Here are some tips and tricks to boost creativity.

Inspiration is everywhere
Explore different outlets that can spark creativity. For example, if you’re hitting writer’s block, read. If you’re in a dance rut, watch dance videos. Whatever form of art you’re practicing, simply step away from your project so you can find inspiration elsewhere. Better yet, consume a type of art that isn’t directly related to yours.

Take a step back
When you’re too focused on something, it can be difficult to gain perspective. One of the best ways to get those creative juices flowing again is to take a step back and let your imagination wander. It’s often in these moments where the most organic ideas are born.

Be OK with imperfections
Creativity is a learning process, so don’t be so hard on yourself. Remind yourself that art isn’t meant to be perfect and that sometimes, a finished product is better than a perfect product.

Tell your fear to take the backseat
Of course, any creative venture can come with a host of anxieties, especially since creating something means that you’re taking a part of yourself and turning it into something for the rest of the world to see, hear, read, feel, and critique. But, as Elizabeth Gilbert advises in Big Magic, “[Live] a life that is driven more strongly by curiosity than by fear.”

Set a routine
Once you’re free of your creative rut, set a routine. In The War of Art, Steven Pressfield writes, “The most important thing about art is to work. Nothing else matters except sitting down every day and trying.” It’s important to channel your creative energy every day to make it a habit. Once you’ve developed that, you’ll notice fewer creative blocks.
