Small talk doesn’t usually involve talking about the way your body smells (no matter how close you are!). But when it comes to your lady bits, the odor — whether it smells or not — is something worth discussing or at least take notice of.
If your vagina has a scent, you’re not alone! Everyone’s vagina has a scent that’s unique to them. Not only are these scents normal, but they can also be healthy. The scent that your vagina gives off can change based on a number of things including diet, the type of fabric you wear, sexual activity, your level of personal hygiene, and more.
The fishy smell is your red flag. So your vagina has a scent, but if it ever becomes a foul or “rotten” smell, then it’s time to see your doctor. Some women might notice their vagina has a fishy smell when something is wrong. A fishy scent might be a symptom of one of two vaginal infections: bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. Bacterial vaginosis is an infection caused by an imbalance of bacteria in your vagina while trichomoniasis is a curable STI. Both infections are usually accompanied by discharge and discomfort. If you notice any of these signals, an appointment with your OB/GYN should clear things up.
Remember, it’s natural! It’s important to reiterate that a scent coming from your vagina is natural. It’s also important to note that using items like douches, scented vaginal wipes, or other products can mask your vagina’s natural scent, which can deter you from catching the first signs of infections. Your vagina is a self-cleaning unit for the most part, but any sign of abnormality with your vagina should be taken up with a doctor to help reduce the risk of bigger health issues.
