Oh, what would we do without mascara? There’s just something about perky eyelashes that tie together any beauty look. But as much as we love the stuff, it’s definitely a real pain to take off — some removing agents are too drying, others just rub the product around, and let’s face it, “raccoon eyes” isn’t a good look for anyone.

So give your eyes a break with these three tips for quickly and gently removing even the most stubborn mascara.

Do a thorough rinse with water
The trick is to avoid waterproof mascara. Unless you’re going to be doing a lot of crying at a wedding (and even then, you’ll be reapplying additional makeup anyway), there’s really no reason for it. Start the removal process with water to loosen up the product without being too abrasive.

Use oil and a cotton pad
Cotton pads are better than their cotton ball counterparts because they don’t leave any residue behind on your face or in your eyes. Douse a cotton round with the oil of your choice (coconut, olive, and jojoba are all solid choices) and lay it flat on your eyes to let your lashes soak up the product. This will further loosen up the makeup so you can avoid rubbing and losing lashes in the process.

Swipe gently and take your time
Use gentle, downward motions to remove the mascara (and any other eye makeup you might have on). Remember, eyes are a super sensitive part of the face, so treat them gently. Once you’ve gotten the bulk of the mascara off (around the time you probably look like a panda), rinse everything off and proceed to remove the rest of your makeup.
