Even on our best days, it’s tough to get through the dreaded midday slump. We can get a good night’s sleep and skip the vino before bed, but we’re still on a one way trip to snoozeville when the clock strikes three.
We found a few key methods you can integrate throughout your work day to stay energized during your 9 to 5. A few tweaks in your day will have your co-workers wondering how you have so much energy!
Set Your Sights on Success
For those of us who have to stare at a computer screen all day, mid-afternoon headaches are basically a given. However, some spec companies like EyeBuyDirect created lenses with digital protection so we don’t have to strain our peepers to get work done (whether you have a prescription or not). It shields your eyes from the blue light that a lot of digital screens emit. Keeping the blue light at bay will protect damage on your eyes and help you avoid general headaches and eye strain.
Move, Please!
When you have a big project due or have a million tasks on your to-do list, it can seem impossible to leave your desk. However, its’ quite easy to get up and take a five minute walk around the office if you remind yourself to do so. Take a walk with a co-worker down the street or just walk around the office for a few minutes — your body will thank you. If you don’t want to leave the office, try sitting somewhere else in the office to get work done. A change of scenery can give you that little boost to keep you going until the end of the day.
Rise, Shine, and Workout
Getting out of bed is hard! Ugh…we hate it, too. But if you can hop out of bed and squeeze in even a light jog or quick yoga sesh, you will have energy to last throughout the day. According to WebMD, “It may seem counterintuitive, but researchers say expending energy by engaging in regular exercise may pay off with increased energy in the long run.” So while hitting the snooze button sounds nice, you’re better off working out because it’ll keep you from falling asleep at your desk after lunch.
Reach for H2O, Not Coffee
Wait, what? Yes, while we would never tell you to skip your morning cup of joe, hydrating with water throughout the day will rev up your blood flow. If you just can’t skip that 3 p.m. latte, make sure you follow every cup of caffeine with a tall glass of water — it’s all about balance!
Breakfast and Blood Sugar
Eating breakfast is so essential — but it’s not just eating that matters. It’s what you eat that will keep you fueled throughout the day. Skip the sugary breakfast foods and opt for protein, fresh fruit, and whole grains. This will help balance your blood sugar and keep you from crashing or craving junk food midday.
