Whether it’s excessive exposure to chlorine or salt water, the summer season can leave your hair feeling dry and lackluster as your hair tends to lose moisture faster.
“The common causes of [hair] damage we think of are usually chemical treatments and heat styling, but there are so many other natural causes of damage,” says Jamie Brown, director of education at amika.
Show your hair some love this season with expert tips tailored for each hair type.
Type 1: Straight
Trim your dead ends
“Straight-haired clients should consider regular trims to help combat dry ends and damage from wear and tear from environmental damage and manipulation. By trimming dead ends, your hair can focus its energy on healing the rest of the hair strand. Products like amika’s The Kure Bond Repair Shampoo and Conditioner will replenish the weak bonds in your hair, while also hydrating with plant butters like shea and mango,” notes Brown.
Paul Wintner, education manager at ALTERNA® Caviar also shares, “The ALTERNA® Caviar Replenishing Moisture CC Cream is also a great hair perfector to keep hair soft, smooth, and silking despite the exposure to sun, chlorine, or saltwater.”
Type 2: Wavy
Give your hair a break
“…try to go a few days between washes to minimize the number of times the cuticle of the hair strand is opened, which happens when washing. Opening the cuticle makes hair more susceptible to damage,” shares Brown. You should also try to take a break from tying your hair into a ponytail or bun because “hair ties can cause extra breakage.”
If you must use heat, Wintner recommends that you “…use the Alterna Caviar Replenishing Moisture CC Cream prior to applying heat to the hair.”
Type 3: Curly
Conditioning is key
“After shampooing…indulge your hair in 10 minutes of deep conditioning. Be intentional about deep conditioning, weekly, to reduce breakage and prevent moisture depletion. Moisture is essential, as it empowers our curls and coils to be healthy, juicy, and joyful,” advises Ebony Bomani, brand educator at PATTERN.
Type 4: Coily
Seek out hydrating ingredients
“Key ingredients, such as aloe vera, coconut oil, and cacay oil, in the PATTERN Beauty Curl Gel, harmonize to nourish the hair and deliver lasting moisture. The Curl Gel’s smooth, creamy texture and moisturizing attributes make it a favorite for wash-and-gos, twist-outs, braid-outs, and sleek styles. Apply to clean, wet or damp hair for breathtaking definition, touchable hold, and rhythm,” shares Bomani.
