This Thanksgiving, an estimated 40 million drivers will hit the roads and head to their respective destinations in search of turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. With that many drivers hitting the road, you should expect your travels to take longer than usual — that is, if you don’t follow our tips for a more efficient Turkey Day!
Here are some easy hacks to beat holiday traffic and make your trip more seamless.
Have a Navigator and an App
For the ultimate holiday road trip, you’ll need the ultimate traveling partner. Whether it’s your friend, significant other, or a fellow carpooler, you’ll need a trusty shotgun rider who can operate a navigating app. This person can help you find alternate routes or update you about traffic conditions ahead, so you won’t get distracted. Some of our fave apps include Waze, INRIX Traffic, and of course, trusty ol’ Google Maps. Each features real-time traffic updates that can help you identify and avoid slowdowns whenever possible.
Leave Earlier or Later
If you pick the most convenient time to leave (like 10 or 11 a.m.), chances are everyone else is planning to do the same. Instead, you should leave much earlier or much later. Another option is to drive on actual Thanksgiving day (if you can) as traffic tends to be less busy at this time. And the same goes for your return trip: leaving on Friday or Monday rather than Sunday night should result in less traffic.
Have Everything Ready
Pack up the car the night before and get a full tank of gas ahead of time to ensure smooth sailing when leaving for your destination. Make a check list of the important items, as well, including your phone charger, keys, and any food you’re in charge of bringing.
Go With the Flow
While it’s important you get to your destination as quickly as possible, there might be some hiccups along the way. Regardless, keep the safety of you and your passengers top of mind and don’t stress out. Yes, it’s ideal to arrive on time, but it’s more important that you get to your destination safe and sound.
