FALL 2018 BOX PARTNER
Beanies and scarves, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, you and your FabFitFun Box — some pairs are just meant to be. Nothing feels better than finding the perfect match, particularly when it comes to your coffee or tea.
And with your Alfred French Press or Alfred Teapot it couldn’t be easier to whip up your favorite beverage and bite into its yummy counterpart.
So we chatted with Alfred Food and Beverage Director, Jordan Hardin, to discover the food pairings that will make your taste buds do a happy dance.
Coffee
Cold Brew and Anything (Seriously)
“Ahh, cold brew. We’d drink it with anything! The flavors in a good cold brew coffee are subtle and the best approach is something light and simple. A cup of almonds, some oats with a banana, or a simple crisp and sweet apple, paired with a cold brew will make you feel like the goddess you were born to be.”
Americano and Breakfast
“Call us traditionalists, but nothing is better to pair with a strong Americano than the trimmings of a traditional American breakfast: eggs, bacon, and fried potatoes.”
Mocha and Tart Flavors
“A good mocha is hard to beat, but you can definitely accentuate it. We recommend something small with a sweet but also slightly tart flavor, like ripe cherries, blueberries, or blackberries. These will enhance the fruit tones of the espresso but also complement the chocolate.”
Cappuccino and Biscotti
“Remember biscotti? There’s a reason it was so popular! Something crisp and biscuity like a shortbread or gingersnap cookie is perfect with a cappuccino to contrast the creaminess of the milk and toastiness of the espresso.”
Iced Vanilla Latte and Croissant
“The Alfred favorite, an iced vanilla latte is all anyone needs in this world. But, if we had to pair, we’d double down with a flaky, buttery croissant. And if you’ve never done this yet, get ready: use your iced vanilla latte as the ‘milk’ in your cup of granola or cereal…it’s a game changer.”
Tea
Jasmine Green Tea and Poached Chicken
“Jasmine-scented green tea is beautiful on its own, but can also stand up wonderfully to something meaty but lighter, like poached chicken. For an added zing, try adding the tea leaves to the poaching liquid!”
Matcha and Sushi
“Matcha is intense, so you might be tempted to pair it with a bold flavor. We go the opposite: Drink pure matcha with sushi! The richness and earthiness of the matcha make good sushi taste positively sweet. It’s a match made in…well, Japan!”
Breakfast Black and Rich Dishes
“You don’t have to be British to enjoy a classic cuppa. The brisk malty flavor of a good breakfast black tea helps cut through richer dishes and refreshes the palate. Think of a picnic: cucumber sandwiches, perhaps a little cheese and brioche, and a slice of sponge cake would work nicely.”
Chai and Vegetables
“For a unique pairing, try taking the spices that create a chai (cinnamon, ginger, pepper, nutmeg) and using it as a spice rub on roasted root vegetables, like carrots, potatoes, or even cauliflower. The spiced vegetables, matched with a spicy-creamy-sweet chai, definitely take this pairing to a whole new level.”
Earl Grey and Ice Cream
“Want to understand earl grey in a new light? Try drinking it with ice cream! Something hot to drink with a cold scoop of ice cream is magical, and the tannic and citrusy notes of earl grey really sing beside a neutral sweet flavor, like vanilla.”
