How to Fill in Eyebrows

Eyebrow trends have come and gone throughout beauty history. From Cleopatra’s carbon black painted brows to Lauren Bacall’s rich arch, the history of the eyebrow has had its share of ups and downs.¹

But right now, big brows are everywhere, on both influencers and your favorite barista. It’s enough to give an overplucked set an inferiority complex.

It can seem confusing or overwhelming when you’re trying to learn new beauty techniques, like how to plump lips or fill in brows. But don’t panic! Getting your own perfect brow — whether it’s big and bold, slim and tapered, or something in between — is a cinch with our five step process. So toss your tweezers and pinch your pencils, friends, because here we go!

Step 1: Choose Your Brow

Before getting the brow you want, take a moment to consider the brow you have. Without any makeup and in a strong, natural light, look at your face and consider the following:

What is your overall face shape?
- Oval
- Square
- Round
- Diamond
- Rectangular
- Heart

What kind of eyebrows do you grow naturally?
- Long or short?
- Thick or thin?
- Light or dark?
- Arched or flat?
- Thinned by overplucking or hormone changes?

Successfully filling your brows means finding a color and shape that suits your face shape and natural tones. It might help to take a selfie and scrutinize a still frame instead of using a mirror. Keeping a record will also give you a good before photo to contrast with your finished product.

Choose a Shape

When it comes to eyebrows, the possibilities are vast, so choosing the perfect eyebrow shape that’s right for your face may take a little trial and error.² Luckily, there are several basic shapes that flatter most faces.

If you’re new to eyebrow art, start with one of these:

Shallow arch – This is a subtle shape that works beautifully for oval faces. Just mildly lifted in the middle towards the tail, this look is easy to achieve if your brows are naturally flat or rounded.
Round – This symmetrical brow shape lifts only in the middle, creating a wide-eyed look that suits diamond faces.
Flat – A flat eyebrow is a good match for a long or rectangular face. Lucky are the ladies who choose this brow because it looks fierce when bushy and natural.
High arch – This brow shape is a little more advanced and requires a bit of maintenance, but it works perfectly to add balance to heart-shaped faces.

Step 2: Get Supplied

Once you’ve settled on your eyebrow goals, it’s time to purchase the must-have products and tools you’ll need to get there. Always invest in high-quality tools; they’re absolutely worthwhile.

It can get overwhelming walking through an eyebrow aisle and seeing a tremendous amount of products from eyebrow pencils, clear brow gel, tinted gel, powder, etc.

But don’t panic, here’s all you’ll need:

Spoolie brush
Angled brow brush
Brow liners in two colors
- One slightly darker than your natural shade
- One slightly lighter than your natural shade
Brow powder that matches your natural shade
Brow gel that matches your natural shade or clear
Concealer or translucent powder
Two small angled brushes

Step 3: Make an Outline

With your brow goal in mind and your supplies in hand, you’re ready to begin filling. You might have noticed that your brows are not identical. They shouldn’t be. A common saying about eyebrows is that they are sisters, not twins.

To make sure they eventually match, take these steps:

Define the start of your brow – Fluff your eyebrows using your spoolie brush. Next, hold a pencil or brush vertically against the outer edge of your nose. Angle it to cross the inner corner of your eye. Your eyebrow should start where the brush touches your brow bone.
Define the tail of your brow – Hold your brow brush so that it touches the outside corner of your nose and angles across your cheek to the outer corner of your eye. The tail of your brow should line up with these points.
Outline in between – Using a gentle hand, outline where you want your brow to land from tip to tail. Whether you go thin or thick, arched or flat, is a matter of personal preference. Remember, however, to go in small steps. A dark brow where you had none before can be a shock.

This is your perfect eyebrow shape according to your features. Now you’re ready to fill in your brows if needed, or if there’s a sparse area.

Step 4: Finally, Fill

Using your liners, alternate thin small strokes of both liner colors within your outlined brow. Use your spoolie brush periodically to draw the color through the brow. When you feel that you’ve created a natural filling, use a small amount of powder on an angled brush to give the brow a rich and uniform look.

Step 5: Clean and Set

When your brows look shaped and filled to your satisfaction, run a few strokes of a one-swipe brow gel across them. This will hold your finished product in place. Always brush up and out.Finally, finish your brows by dipping an angled brush into a small amount of concealer or translucent powder. Run this along the lower line of the brow to give it a clean appearance.
