Over the past year, with good reason, everyone has been interested in building up their immune systems. Who doesn’t want to wake up in the morning, feeling good and confident that they are as healthy as they can be? Your immune system helps fight off any illness, big or small, and there are natural ways you can boost your overall health.
Building immunity doesn’t have to be a chore — it’s as easy as making a few lifestyle and dietary changes. It’s not a quick fix though…you have to make these changes and stick with them but your body will thank you in the long run!
Get eight hours of sleep
Sleeping enough during the night is a simple yet easy way to build up your immune system, mostly because immunity and rest are very closely linked. That’s why you feel so tired when you’re sick as your body is using its strength to fight the illness. It’s also why you sleep so much when you’re sick. If you can get at least eight hours every night, you’ll be able to fight off any cold or virus.
Incorporate immune-boosting foods into your diet
While the saying is “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” it’s important to know that there are other foods that are essential in building up your immune system. Garlic, vitamin C, and antioxidant-enriched foods such as oranges, broccoli, kiwi, and berries are what you should reach for when you’re wanting to keep illness at bay.
Take probiotics to keep a healthy gut
Gut health is so important in your overall wellbeing but it is really key in having a healthy immune system. Studies show that healthy gut bacteria helps your immune cells tell the difference between healthy and unhealthy cells. You can give your body the probiotics it needs by eating more fermented foods such as yogurt or you can take a daily probiotic supplement. A healthy gut means a better equipped immune system!
Exercise regularly
This might seem very obvious but if you regularly exercise, whether that’s a daily walk, a Peloton class, or weight lifting, you will be strong enough to fight off illness. If you’re regularly exercising, your immune system will be able to maintain itself, regenerate regularly, and reduce inflammation in cells.
Keep stress to a minimum
This is easier said than done when there is so much to be stressed about, all the time. However, stress causes inflammation and imbalance in immune cells, which can lower your body’s response time to illness. Find healthy ways to deal with stress like meditation, yoga, journaling, or even seeking professional help to keep your immune system, and mental health, in tip-top shape.
As always, consult your doctor or a medical professional with any questions about your health.
