It’s no secret that the French know what’s up when it comes to healthy, gorgeous skin. In case you’ve been wondering what they’re doing to maintain this rep, you’re in for a real treat. We chatted with Celebrity Esthetician Renee Rouleau, who’s part French herself, to reveal some uh-mazing French beauty secrets.
Check out what she had to say below!
Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet
Whenever I’m in France, I’m always struck by the fact that I see so few people (both teens and adults alike) with acne. I have to believe this is due to the lower stress lifestyle they live as well as less consumption of processed, high-sugar foods. They eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats all followed with some good wine.
Wash your face every night—faithfully
I find that [French] men, women, and teens are very diligent about washing their face every night before they go to bed. This is one skin care step they won’t skip. Clean skin is definitely clear skin.
Drink…in moderation
Having wine at most meals is a standard French tradition. What I notice is that French people don’t overindulge, and don’t drink to excess. Overindulging leads to dull, tired skin, including capillary damage and a rough texture due to dehydration.
Invest in good quality skin care products
The French take their skin seriously, and they don’t skimp on the price tag of a skin care product. That’s not to say that the price of skin care products are exorbitant, but they really focus on quality. There are many French manufacturers that make amazing skin care products, and this is an area French women will invest in.
Be patient with your skin care products
Americans start a skin care regimen and then quickly change when they don’t get immediate results. Skin care products can take 6-8 weeks for you to truly see results.
Get facials often
The French have both invented and perfected the art of the facial and getting regular monthly facials is part of their culture. It’s not uncommon for a French woman to even get facials every week! In the U.S., a woman might only get facial several times per year.
Take care of your skin, starting at an early age
Prevention is the key to their beautiful skin. By starting young (as early as 15), getting regular facials and following a good home care routine are very important to the French. They know that how they care for their skin today paves the road for the future health of their skin.
Wear minimal makeup
Because they are so disciplined about caring for their skin, they like to reveal its beauty, rather than covering it up with heavy makeup. Makeup is viewed as something to enhance them, not to hide under.
