After Irish immigrants started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/03\/15\/st-patricks-day_n_1348003.html\" target=\"_blank\">the first St. Patrick\u2019s Day parade<\/a> in New York City in the 1700s, the holiday became a staple in American culture, and green was widely accepted as the color to wear in its home country and across the state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Green has context with religion in Ireland.\u00a0<\/strong>St. Patrick\u2019s Day is a Catholic holiday, which commemorates Ireland\u2019s patron saint and the arrival of Christianity to the country. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/articles\/148061-why-do-we-wear-green-on-st-patricks-day-a-brief-history-behind-this-tradition\" target=\"_blank\">St. Patrick himself used a clover<\/a>, or a shamrock (which has three leaves) in his teachings about the Holy Trinity &#8212; the father, son, and the holy spirit. Shamrocks are also green and indicate the spring season!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The green in the Irish flag is symbolic.\u00a0<\/strong>The Irish flag is divided into three strips of color &#8212; green, white, and orange. In Ireland, it&#8217;s common for Catholics to wear green and for Protestants to wear orange.
