Despite how unsettling and disturbing this election has been, one important topic has been\u00a0brought to the forefront: sexual assault. <\/span>From all the <\/span>women coming forward claiming to be sexually assaulted by Donald Trump<\/span><\/a> to the \u201clocker room talk,\u201d this issue has everyone\u2019s well-deserved attention. <\/span><\/p>\n

The United States Department of Justice recently released <\/span>statistics<\/span><\/a> about sexual assault in America, and the results are baffling. The estimated number of people who were sexually assaulted in 2015 alone is about 627,700. Sexual assault here is defined as, \u201cattacks or attempted attacks generally involving unwanted sexual contact between the victim and offender that may or may not involve force.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Sexual assault in this country is ubiquitous, so here are some cold hard facts that everyone should know. <\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Sexual assault is <\/span>not <\/span><\/i>inevitable.
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Sexual assault cannot be chalked up to the result of wearing\u00a0a short skirt, a plunging neckline, or tight pants.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Both men and women are victims. <\/span><\/li>\n
  4. One in\u00a0four women will be sexually assaulted in college.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Over one-third of women who were raped as minors are also raped as adults. <\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Four percent of men will be sexually assaulted in college. <\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Not all men do it. <\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Sexual assault is not a crime of passion — it is an act of violence.<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Sexual consent can be given and withheld, regardless of your relationship with the other person.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. An estimated <\/span>60 percent<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of sexual assault cases go unreported. <\/span><\/li>\n
  11. Out of every 1,000 rapes that occur, <\/span>994 of the perpetrators<\/span><\/a> will not go to jail. <\/span><\/li>\n
  12. Only 43 percent of female victims and 10 percent of male victims in the military reported sexual assault. <\/span><\/li>\n
  13. 20 percent of sexual assault victims will not report due to fear of retaliation. <\/span><\/li>\n
  14. Whether or not a person decides to report being sexually assaulted does not mean it did not happen.<\/span><\/li>\n
  15. The majority of sexual assault cases are\u00a0<\/span>committed by someone the victim already knows<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n
  16. Sexual assault can occur in a marriage. <\/span><\/li>\n
  17. Sexual assault can occur in while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. <\/span><\/li>\n
  18. Aside from retaliation, there are <\/span>many reasons<\/span><\/a> why sexual assaults go unreported. <\/span><\/li>\n
