{"id":88867,"date":"2016-09-16T12:28:58","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T19:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fabfitfun.com\/magazine\/?p=88867"},"modified":"2016-09-17T11:10:30","modified_gmt":"2016-09-17T18:10:30","slug":"transgender-7th-grader-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fabfitfun.com\/magazine\/transgender-7th-grader-speech\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch This Transgender Student&#8217;s Brave Speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re in awe of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/davidmack\/this-transgender-boy-gave-a-powerful-speech-to-counter-fear?utm_term=.tng0jYnj2b#.vh072ab2AY\" target=\"_blank\">transgender student&#8217;s bravery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ari Bowman, a 7th grader from the East Penn School District,\u00a0addressed transphobia with a personal and powerful speech after a cisgender student complained about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/dominicholden\/obama-administration-to-tell-schools-transgender-students-ca?utm_term=.asX35bD5om#.bdkRbjlb8e\" target=\"_blank\">President Obama&#8217;s new guidelines<\/a>, stating she would not change in a\u00a0locker room with transgender students due to religious reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman realized he was transgender in the 5th grade &#8212; before he even knew gender was a word &#8212; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/alisa.bowman\/videos\/vb.1056274090\/10209101566990422\/?type=2&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\">said in response<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I change in the boy&#8217;s locker room and I have seen zero genitalia, which is kind of why I do not understand that people make the assumption that a transgender student would accidentally reveal herself in the locker room&#8230;The hate that the transgender community has been receiving lately has been terrible.
