Oklahoma is about to deal with some tough battles.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, the Republican-dominated state\u00a0passed a bill which will make\u00a0it a felony for any doctor to\u00a0perform<\/a> an abortion — except in cases where a mother’s life is in danger.<\/p>\n

The bill can hold doctors punishable by\u00a0up to three years in prison if they perform this medical procedure. Governor Mary Fallin, a Republican opposed to abortion, must sign the bill for it\u00a0to follow through. She has stated<\/a> that she will need time to consider the bill.<\/p>\n

During a debate, Republican Nathan Dahm, an author of the bill, said<\/a>, “Since I believe life begins at conception, it should be protected, and I believe it’s a core function of state government to defend that life from the beginning of conception.”<\/p>\n

Supporters of the bill say it will be able to withstand legal challenges as the state is within its right to set licensing requirements for doctors.<\/p>\n

However, opponents of the bill are stating that it will\u00a0lead to expensive legal battles.<\/p>\n

“This obviously unconstitutional bill will never withstand legal scrutiny, and is designed to scare doctors and shame women,” said<\/a>\u00a0Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.<\/p>\n
