{"id":77713,"date":"2016-04-05T10:40:58","date_gmt":"2016-04-05T17:40:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fabfitfun.com\/magazine\/?p=77713"},"modified":"2016-04-05T10:40:58","modified_gmt":"2016-04-05T17:40:58","slug":"birth-control-now-more-accessible-in-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fabfitfun.com\/magazine\/birth-control-now-more-accessible-in-california\/","title":{"rendered":"Birth Control Is Now More Accessible in California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Big news:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/2016\/04\/107571\/pharmacists-prescribe-birth-control-california-bill\" target=\"_blank\">Starting Friday, in California women no longer need a prescription to obtain birth control<\/a>.\u00a0This change occurs from a 2013 bill which would allow women to get\u00a0birth control from their local pharmacies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does this mean?<\/strong><br \/>\nWomen of any age can now get a pill, patch, or ring at a pharmacy as long as they fill out a 20-question health-screening questionnaire. If any answers reveal potential risks, the pharmacist will counsel the patient and refer them with\u00a0additional\u00a0care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where else is this law in effect?<\/strong><br \/>\nWashington and Oregon are the only two other states to have this law in effect. However, Oregon requires that women be at least 18 years old.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are all pharmacies going to comply with this change?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe law does not require all pharmacies to comply with\u00a0this new change so you&#8217;re not guaranteed to get birth control at <em>every<\/em> drugstore. However, a handful of pharmacies have already started training their employees in anticipation of the new law.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does this mean birth control is available over-the-counter?<\/strong><br \/>\nNo, birth control is not available over-the-counter. Women still need to speak with a pharmacist and fill out the questionnaire before they can get it, but it does make it more readily accessible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the purpose of this change?<\/strong><br \/>\nThis new law is intended to make it easier for women to obtain birth control, therefore encouraging more women to use it.<\/p>\n<p>What are your thoughts on this new law?
