This is sometimes known as \u201cdoomscrolling,\u201d and it\u2019s a trap that\u2019s become especially easy to fall into since the pandemic. Here are some tips to help you avoid the temptation of doomscrolling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Limit your time reading the news.<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHistorically, there were traditional news broadcasts that were time-limited,\u201d explains Dr. Allison Chase, a psychologist with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pathlightbh.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pathlight Mood and Anxiety Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cNow, there is an endless barrage of news available anytime anywhere. It is left to us to establish these boundaries on our own.\u201d One way you can set boundaries is by using an app or plugin that will limit how much time you can spend on a given site, like the Chrome extension <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/blocksite-stay-focused-co\/eiimnmioipafcokbfikbljfdeojpcgbh?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BlockSite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Seek out positive news.<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chase also suggests finding sites that contain only positive news or funny stories (or even cute videos) to satiate your craving for internet browsing without putting you into dangerous territory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reach out to a friend.<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doomscrolling is often a search for connection,\u201d explains s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elf-love mentor <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/selfloverevolution.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jonathan Troen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So, instead of turning to the internet for that, call or text a friend when you feel tempted to doomscroll. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat person that keeps popping up in your head, and you tell yourself, \u2018I should really call her\u2019 \u2014 make this the time to call that person,\u201d he suggests. \u201cYou&#8217;ll get the connection you&#8217;re looking for. And a bonus, you might just make the other person&#8217;s day and stop them from doomscrolling.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Be thoughtful about who you follow.<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re consistently hearing depressing news from certain websites or social media accounts, clinical psychologist <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.envisionwellness.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erika Martinez, Psy.D., CDWF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends unfollowing or muting them. You might also want to stop following people who go on rants that leave you worrying, she adds. \u201cT<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heir posts are their opinions; don&#8217;t confuse it with real news.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Practice mindfulness.<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindfulness activities include not only meditation but also things like cooking, exercising, and taking walks, says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coachingbykati.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">therapist and life coach Kati Meyers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBy utilizing mindfulness, we can achieve lowered blood pressure and heart rate, minimize psychological distress, and become better able to focus on and pay attention to whatever we are doing at that moment without being preoccupied [with] the incessant flood of stimuli on our phones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Do you have any tips on how to stop doomscrolling?
