In addition to protecting yourself and others, cloth face masks are less harmful to the environment and more comfortable than its disposable counterpart<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But it&#8217;s also important to note that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there is some care that comes along with them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We spoke to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Elizabeth Mullans <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M.D., board-certified dermatologist at Uptown Dermatology to get her advice on all things masks!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How often should I wash my face mask?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masks should be washed every day and after each use, whether or not the ties are fabric or elastic,\u201d Dr. Mullans advises.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While washing your mask after every wear can be time-consuming, it\u2019s very important as you don\u2019t want any bacteria lingering in the fabric.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How do I wash my face mask?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s best to wash your masks <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in hot water with a gentle, non-fragrance detergent and white vinegar, then dry on high heat. Dr.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mullans also advises staying away from fragrant detergents. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detergents with fragrances can leave residue in the fabric, which can also cause a rash in people with sensitive skin. Since repeated washing and drying may cause fabric masks to deteriorate faster, and because some people are sensitive to fragrance, I recommend using a mild, fragrance-free detergent such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armandhammer.com\/en\/laundry\/sensitive-skin\/sensitive-skin\/sensitive-skin-free-and-clear-50-oz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arm &amp; Hammer Sensitive Skin Free and Clear Detergent<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What if my face mask causes irritation?<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your skin is reacting badly to your cloth mask even after following the proper cleaning steps, the reaction might not have anything to do with how you\u2019re caring for it.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey physically rub against the skin, which can damage the skin&#8217;s protective barrier and they trap moisture which can cause further irritation,&#8221; says Dr. Mullans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, try washing your face with a gentle cleanser, hydrating with a fragrance-free moisturizer, and look for products that contain hyaluronic acid and ceramides.
