The gym is a breeding ground for bacteria as sweat and dirt collect on equipment and machines.

However, there’s no need to stop exercising in fear of getting sick. Instead, clean off your workout tools before and after each sweat sesh to maintain a healthy and hygienic workout routine.

Dumbbells and kettlebells
Free weights are one of the most germ-infested workout tools. In fact, the average set of free weights carries more than 362 times more germs than a toilet seat (um, ew). Give them a quick spray of a water and dish soap mixture or clean them with a solution of vinegar and water.

Medicine ball
Great for squats and crunches, medicine balls are also prone to collecting your dripping sweat. As your sweat glands collect, so does bacteria and fungi. Use gym equipment wipes or surface disinfectant to sterilize them well.

Yoga mat
You might think you’re safe if you have your own yoga mat, but the reality is you carry germs too. Be sure to wipe down your yoga mat regularly with warm water. Dry it with a terry cloth, and allow it to air dry.

Treadmills
With 74 times more bacteria than a water faucet, it’s no wonder that treadmill runners often fall prey to viruses. Before you start your run, wipe down the screen and handlebars thoroughly with a surface disinfectant. For a more thorough clean, wipe down the belt with a slightly dampened cloth.

Resistance bands
Resistance bands are extremely versatile pieces that target many areas of your body. Give them a regular cleaning with a damp cloth, but do not use soap or cleaning products as this will deteriorate the material of the bands.

Exercise bikes
Wipe down the seat, handles, and screen with an at-home solution of 50% water and 50% white vinegar. Give it a spray both before and after your ride.

xx, The FabFitFun Team

[4,5,3
