Oxidized jewelry is officially no longer a bad thing. In fact, so far in 2019, it\u2019s proving to be quite the popular trend. So much so that, according to Pinterest<\/a>, it\u2019s up 1,112%, making it a top search for summer accessories.<\/p>\n

What is it?<\/b>
\nIf you\u2019re unsure what oxidized jewelry is, think about a blackened silver or gold that creates a distinctive, antique look. \u201cThe surface of sterling silver is darkened most commonly through a chemical process using sulfur,\u201d says Pinterest Insights Manager Swasti Sarna, also noting that any metal can be oxidized.<\/p>\n

Why is it trending?\u00a0<\/strong>
\nWhat once was considered something to be buffed off with one of those magical jewelry polishing cloths is now something to admire and flaunt. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen a rise in antique looks, particularly in jewelry and furniture,\u201d says Sarna. \u201cOxidized jewelry has an elegant antique look and looks great with bright summer colors. The metal often has intricate patterns, such as [a] delicate carving, and is actually very popular in Indian fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Should you wear it?<\/strong>
\nThinking you might want to try the vintage look for yourself? Sarna says you can shop it directly on Pinterest by searching \u201coxidized jewelry\u201d and sorting by product pins<\/a> to shop brands big and small across different price points. If, on the other hand, you\u2019re more of a DIY girl, you\u2019ll be glad to know you can oxidize your own jewelry. \u201cWhile oxidizing jewelry is best left to the professionals, there are a couple of easier at-home methods to achieve this look, including using boiled eggs<\/a> or black gilders paste<\/a>,\u201d Sarna says.<\/p>\n
