Whether you’re in need of a mascara, bronzer, or bold lipstick,\u00a0shopping for beauty products at the drugstore is an easy and inexpensive way to fill your collection. But when it comes down to it, there are a handful of beauty products that are actually worth\u00a0<\/em>splurging on.<\/p>\n

We asked five makeup artists to share the items they would never buy at the drugstore.<\/p>\n

Foundation<\/strong>
\n\u201cIt\u2019s much harder to gauge how the product will look and feel on the skin since you often can\u2019t try it out for yourself in the store,\u201d says makeup artist and makeup educator Melissa Sassine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cFoundation is another product that is worth investing in,\u201d says New Jersey makeup\u00a0artist and beauty influencer Kat Gora<\/a>. \u201cEst\u00e9e Lauder’s Double Wear<\/a> is one of my favorite foundations because it’s great for all skin types, is\u00a0oil-free, and non-acne genic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gel eyeliners<\/strong>
\n\u201cDon\u2019t buy gel liners from a drugstore because it’s usually not black enough and it dries super fast, not giving you enough playtime,\u201d says Juliana Fink<\/a> of JFink Beauty<\/a>. \u201cMy favorite gel eyeliner is from Inglot<\/a>, it\u2019s the best I have ever used!\u201d<\/p>\n

Brushes<\/strong>
\n\u201cYou’ll never catch me buying cheap makeup brushes,\u201d says Robin Black<\/a> of Beauty is Boring<\/a>. \u201cCheap brushes are typically poorly made with unethically-sourced animal fur or non-biodegradable synthetic hairs and toxic plastic handles. If all of that wasn’t enough, cheap brushes just don’t blend or apply product very well,\u201d says Black. “Instead, try the vegan makeup brushes from Urban Decay or Chanel,\u201d says Black.<\/p>\n

Moisturizer<\/strong>
\n\u201cDon\u2019t buy a\u00a0commercial moisturizer. Instead, try organic jojoba from the health food store,\u201d says Kaye Tuckerman<\/a>, former Creative Director of Inglot Cosmetics<\/a>. \u201cJojoba is the closest to the oils produced by the human body.\u201d<\/p>\n

Concealer<\/strong>
\n\u201cA good under-eye concealer is always worth splurging on and I generally stay away from buying drugstore brands in this category,\u201d says Gora. \u201cOne of my favorite concealers is Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra Longwear Concealer<\/a>. It provides buildable medium to full coverage while hydrating, brightening, and correcting the under-eye area.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eyeshadow primer<\/strong>
\n\u201cNothing is as good as Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer<\/a>. Primers from drugstores or other brands are either too oily or too creamy that when the shadow is applied, it doesn’t mix well,\u201d says Sarah Wood<\/a> of Makeup by Woody.<\/p>\n

Eyebrow pencil<\/strong>
\n\u201cI found that some brands are too hard and need several swipes to show up or are too slick and rub off easily or fade quickly,\u201d says Wood. \u201cI use Anastasia Beverly Hills<\/a> eyebrow pencil because the wax formula glides on easily and locks into place for all-day, natural wear!\u201d<\/p>\n
