However, we should actually be taking a much more proactive role like ensuring everything that needs to be addressed is discussed and asking certain questions (as embarrassing as some may be).

Not sure where to start? We asked OB/GYN Dr. Angela Jones what questions you should ask at your next appointment.

Is my discharge normal?
It’s normal to produce some vaginal discharge, but if there’s an unusual smell, color, or an itchy or burning feeling, it could indicate a bigger health concern like a yeast infection or STI. If something seems off, don’t be afraid to ask (better safe than sorry!).

How do I give myself a breast exam?
You’ve probably heard about at-home breast exams, but when’s the last time you gave yourself one? “This is one of those things that everyone neglects, but really should prioritize,” says Jones. In fact, she considers it even more important than getting a pap smear. If you’re too shy to ask your OB/GYN about it, you can also read about how to give yourself a breast exam here.

Am I using the best birth control for me?
There’s no universal best form of birth control because it all depends on which kind you can use most effectively. For example, if your schedule is too hectic to take a pill at the same time every day, you might prefer an IUD, implant, or ring. Or if you want to get pregnant soon, you may not want to use Depo-Provera, which takes a few months to wear off. Your needs might change throughout your life, so keep checking in on what works best.

Are my periods normal?
Keep track of your period so you can tell your doctor about it. If you’ve skipped cycles, had a period that lasted longer than a week, experienced bad PMS, or anything else notable, let your doctor know. Your OB/GYN can help you identify what health issues these abnormalities could indicate. Use apps like Flo to keep track of your menstrual cycle, so you can easily reference it at your next appointment.

Is my body ready for a healthy pregnancy?
In addition to figuring out whether you want to become a parent, preparation for pregnancy should ideally involve ensuring your body is in tiptop shape. This can include maintaining a healthy weight, controlling conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, and taking prenatal vitamins.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask your OB/GYN (because trust us, they’ve heard it all).

xx, The FabFitFun Team

[4,5

https://static.fabfitfun.com/magazine/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/22133235/shutterstock_704212144.jpg
https://static.fabfitfun.com/magazine/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/22133235/shutterstock_704212144-386x200.jpg
