The Standard American Diet (S.A.D. for short) is, well, pretty sad. The food that most of our population relies on is processed, refined, nutritionally lacking, and works against our bodies’ natural processes. This dangerous combo makes a negative impact on both our bodies and the environment.

That’s what lead us to our real foods superhero, Pamela Salzman. Known for her delicious, whole foods-based recipes, this certified holistic health counselor, chef, and author of “Kitchen Matters” is transforming the way we eat — one tasty meal at a time. And with many of her recipes available exclusively to FabFitFun members on FabFitFunTV, it couldn’t be easier to tap into her expertise. We’re talking a yummy grain bowl, sheet pan chicken, “good for you” pasta, and more.

We chatted with the health food guru about everything from must-have ingredients to the one kitchen item you need.

Why did you partner with FabFitFunTV?
FabFitFun and I both want to help people live their best lives and we both know how people are more inspired through visual learning.

Where do you find inspiration to create new and original recipes?
I am very inspired by my local farmers’ markets more than anything. But I often come up with new ideas from traveling or going to new restaurants.

What has been your favorite meal to cook as of late?
I have been on a major soup kick lately. It’s so healing and soothing. I usually like a chicken stock based soup with a whole grain and lots of seasonal veggies.

Any advice for working women who can’t find time to cook?
It’s definitely a challenge, but by committing to it, cooking can be done. Make a meal plan for the week. Shop all at once. And prep whatever you can on the weekends. Also, there are lots of things that can be bought that can give you a head start, like frozen brown rice, canned beans, frozen veggies, and washed salad greens.

How did you get into cooking?
I have always loved to eat, and my mom had a very limited repertoire of what she cooked. I basically asked her if I could make dinner once in a while. She was like, “Be my guest!” So I read cookbooks and “Gourmet” magazine and experimented and it was as simple as that.

What are five ingredients you always have in your fridge/pantry?
Olive oil, garlic, cooked beans, lemons, [and], eggs.

What kitchen item is worth investing in?
A good quality chef’s knife.

Any tips on how to find quality ingredients at the most competitive price?
I am obsessed with ThriveMarket.com, which sells great products at discounted prices. I also use the Whole Foods app, which can help save money. Also, buy produce when it’s in season. It will be less expensive and taste 100 times better than something that was picked underripe and shipped from far away.

xx, The FabFitFun Team

It’s time to get real…real foods, that is.
