Meanwhile, check out our interview with owner Beth Bishop, on what first-timers should expect and how she discovered her love for fitness.

How did you first discover your love for fitness and health?
Fitness has always been in my blood. My favorite outfit when I was three years old was a onesie that said “workout” on the pocket. I used to stand at the top of the stairs and scream “workout” and try to get my parents to do aerobics with me. I swam competitively in college, have done 12 marathons, one Ironman triathlon, and am currently competing in Spartan Races.

What inspired you to start The Phoenix Effect?
There’s nothing more rewarding than helping others become their best selves through fitness. I love my private clients, but private training is not very affordable for the average person, and the boutique studios were not really cutting it for quality strength and conditioning programming. We created Phoenix Effect to give clients high-quality fitness programming, excellent coaching, a supportive community, and results at a fraction of the cost of a trainer.

What are people most surprised about when they first try your workout?
How challenging yet doable and fun working out can be.

Any client success stories?
We have helped thousands of clients get stronger. It’s very hard to choose just one success story. I will say we’ve had people lose hundreds of pounds, people leave toxic jobs and relationships because they feel empowered in their new bodies, and do things they could never do. Our studio also runs a charity Spartan Race program where we train our athletes to do crazy obstacle course races while raising money for charities. To date, we have raised over $250,000 for charities such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Alliance for Housing and Healing.

How do you motivate yourself to workout when you’re not in the mood?
It’s very rare that I’m not motivated to work out, but when I’m not, I head to my studio to take a class. The energy and camaraderie of our athletes get me excited every time.

How do you think fitness has changed in the digital realm?
From a professional standpoint, I have really enjoyed seeing more fitness professionals communicate and inspire each other on Instagram and YouTube especially. It’s exciting and fun to learn new things every day from people around the world. Consumers are savvier and expect a higher level of excellence now that they can really see what’s out there and what’s going on. Many consumers are also now able to access high-quality workouts in their own homes, which is why I’m jazzed to see FabFitFun offering this kind of content.
