Never know how much to tip when you go out to eat, get your hair done, or order delivery? Well, you’re not alone. Tipping is subjective, and not only does service play a part in how we tip, but our moods also control how much money we might shell out at any given moment.
To help you out, we’re sharing the general rule of thumb for tipping different types of services below.
Hair salons
Getting your locks done is expensive, but it’s customary to give anywhere between 15% to 20% as a tip. It’s also always nice to tip when you get your hair washed by an assistant – usually $3 or $4 will do.
Nail and waxing services
The norm for nail and waxing services is 15% to 20%. If you had a manicure and pedicure done by separate technicians, then it’s customary to tip both. However, the unspoken tipping rule is that the higher tip goes to the technician who performed the pedicure.
Massages
Just like hair and nail salons, massage therapists should be tipped anywhere between 15% to 20% and usually closer to the latter since it’s a luxury service. The better the tip, the more likely your next massage will be just as good or even better.
Bartender
Generally, 15% is a perfect tip, but most people follow the $2 rule – for every drink ordered, tip the bartender $2.
Server
While 15% to 20% is the sweet spot, it’s important to also acknowledge how much time you stay at the restaurant and how attentive the service was. If you stay an hour after your meal to catch up with friends, you’ll want to tip the server an extra 10% to 15% as they’re likely missing out on the opportunity to fill your seats and make more tips. You should also keep in mind how attentive they were – if you had your server running back and forth for extra condiments every five minutes, it’s polite to give a little extra cash.
Delivery
For those delivery services that don’t automatically charge a fee, such as ordering pizza from your local pizzeria, it’s customary to tip between 15% and 20% as well. However, on days when the weather is especially bad, it’s nice to give a higher tip.
