This is bear-y incredible news. Giant pandas are no longer an endangered species!
After decades of conservation efforts, the panda has gone from “endangered” to “vulnerable” thanks to a population rebound in China. It was announced with the update to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.
BBC noted that China’s efforts to protect their national animal brought the number of giant pandas up to 1,864 adults. Although conversation efforts are effective, the IUCN warned “the rebound could be short-lived” as climate change can wipe out more than a third of the giant panda’s habitat.
The best way to help combat climate change would be to be active about “effective forest protection measures” and to make sure “emerging threats are addressed.”
