Top 10 Fitness Trends for 2014
Try these fab new workouts
1. HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)
This type of workout is done at a high intensity with shorter rest periods. Training Mate founder Luke Milton said that “this style stimulates circulation and increases the heart rate which is great for fat burning. It is so popular at the moment because HIIT delivers the best results.”
2. Indoor Cycling
Spinning has taken on a cult following of its own with “super studios” popping up nationwide over the past year, and 2014 is no exception. Jesse Brune, an instructor at Flywheel in Los Angeles, said, “If you're interested in seeing tangible results in a short period of time then this is the exercise for you.’
3. Aerial/Anti-Gravity Yoga
Yoga while flying in the air sounds part impossible, part terrifying, and part total fun. And if we can look remotely as svelte and graceful as Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario, then suspend us to the ceiling, you crazy yogis! Trainer and fitness coach Ashley Pettit said this is a great way to “constantly change up your fitness regimen to surprise your body and work different muscles, but also have fun and try new things.”
4. At-home Workouts
It’s all about apps! Pettit’s personal faves include The Nike Training Club app where you can train alongside amazing athletes and not need any equipment to break a sweat. Pettit said this is a great option for stay-at-home moms or people on a budget. Another fab option is Shaun Thompson’s brand-new Focus T25 — a workout that offers great results in a short period of time. Thompson, the creator of the Insanity workout, said it's a great way to skip all the hassle that comes with a visit to the gym.
5. Trampoline Classes
Sometimes you just need to add a little spice to your workout. So get yourself to a trampoline class for a fun way to get fit and we will give you full permission to call yourself Sporty Spice. Andie Hecker, founder of Ballet Bodies in Los Angeles, said, “On the trampolines one can expect a full body tone, in addition to fat-burning cardio.… It’s amazing for the metabolism.” Jump on, ladies.
6. Combo Classes
If you’re someone who gets easily bored at the gym try one of the new fusion classes that combine at least two disciplines to keep you on your toes. Try Spinlates for a fun mix of spinning and Pilates or Core Fusion Barre & Cardio at Exhale Spa for a mix of cardio/strength training and barre/yoga.
CrossFit is another example of HIIT type of training that is popping up all over the place and has even spawned its own televised ESPN event. And while it’s been referred to as a cult and “The Jehovah’s Witnesses of workouts,” followers of this fitness craze tout big-time results with a supportive community to boot.
8. Online Workout Membership Programs
There are tons of online workout forums you can join, but Pettit said the DailyBurn.com is the best one out there. Pettit said there is a wide range of workouts available for many different audiences.
9. Boutique, All-Encompassing Lifestyle Programs
Want more access to the ‘experts?” New online boutique programs feature fitness challenges, personal access to your own on-call nutritionist and trainer, and customized workouts tailored for your body so that you can be bringing sexy back by summer. Check out Pettit’s own service at ashleypettitliving.com.
10. Wearable Fitness Devices
At one time only worn by hardcore fitness enthusiasts, wearable devices will now be fully accepted as a part of your arm party — and they come in such fun colors and sleek designs too! They are a great way to track everything from your daily steps to sleep quality. 2014 will bring even more innovation for this fashion-meets-fitness trend. We love the options from FitBit. And fear not, if the band isn’t your style, try the super sleek Zip.
