Avocado lovers can attest to the struggle of trying to ripen a rock-hard avocado. Turns out, there’s an age-old method to skip the trouble and ripen your avocado evenly and quickly.

Say hello to the Avocado Sock. It’s a 100 percent wool sock created by Diane Sherwood, who used her 40 years of experience in the catering business to make ripening avocados fuss-free. It works the same way as the paper bag method as the ethylene gas released from the fruit gets trapped inside the bag — and, in this case, the sock.

But unlike the paper bag method, the Avocado Sock is specifically designed to fit your avocados, which better traps the ethylene gas, thus speeding up the ripening process. The warmth of the sock and the lanolin, a wax found in wool, helps avocados to reach their peak state in just one to two days.
