Walk into a MALIN+GOETZ store, and the first thing you notice is what’s missing. No towering shelves. No hundred-step routine staring back at you. Just clean white labels, a handful of essentials, and the quiet confidence of a brand that has never needed to shout to be heard.

That restraint is the whole story. MALIN+GOETZ was founded in 2004 in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood by Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz, two partners in life and in business who built something genuinely rare in beauty: a brand that got more successful by doing less.

Two Worlds, One Idea

Before there was a MALIN+GOETZ, there was Matthew Malin, a beauty industry veteran who came up through the Saks executive training program and went on to buy for Barneys New York, where he helped launch names like Kiehl’s, Stila, and Nars. He also had eczema, rosacea, and a long list of fragrance allergies, which meant he understood better than most people just how overcomplicated skincare had become and how little of it actually worked for sensitive skin.

Andrew Goetz came from an entirely different world. His background was in design and branding, honed at the Swiss furniture company Vitra, where he developed an eye for restraint, proportion, and function over flourish. The two met in a New York bar in the early 1990s, and what started as a relationship eventually became a business partnership built on a simple, shared frustration: skincare didn’t need to be this complicated, and it definitely didn’t need to look this complicated either.

They started with six products. A cleanser and a moisturizer for face, body, and hair, formulated to work for every skin type, including their own. No filler ingredients, no unnecessary steps, no gendered marketing. At a time when the entire beauty industry was built around selling women as many products as humanly possible, MALIN+GOETZ made the case that men belonged in the conversation too, and that neither audience needed to be sold to with more.

Less, But Better

If MALIN+GOETZ has a north star, it’s this: less, but better. Every product is free of parabens, sulfates, and harsh detergents. Every formula is designed to be gentle enough for sensitive skin while still delivering real results. Their bestsellers today, the Grapefruit Face Cleanser and the Vitamin E Face Moisturizer – both featured in the Fall 2026 FabFitFun Men’s Box – are the same two products they launched with over two decades ago. That kind of staying power isn’t an accident. It’s a direct result of a brand that has always refused to chase trends or flood the market with unnecessary new launches just to stay relevant.

Goetz’s design instincts shaped the brand just as much as Malin’s skincare expertise. The packaging is sans serif and color coded by category, blue for skincare, maroon for hair, green for body, so that even a first-time customer can navigate the lineup without needing an explanation. The stores follow the same logic. Every location is designed by a different architect and rooted in its neighborhood, but the throughline is always the same: minimal, considered, and never precious for the sake of it.

That same philosophy carries through the brand’s fragrance line, which has become just as iconic as its skincare. Dark Rum, their debut scent, built a cult following almost immediately with its warm, boozy, slightly nostalgic character. Since then, the fragrance wardrobe has grown to include Leather, Bergamot, and Cannabis, each one built around a single idea instead of a crowded note pyramid. It’s the same “less is more” thinking, just translated into scent. It’s worth noting that both the Dark Rum and Bergamot fragrances are available in the Fall 2026 FabFitFun Box!

Two Decades of Staying the Course

What’s most impressive about MALIN+GOETZ isn’t that the brand has grown. Plenty of brands grow. It’s that it has grown without abandoning the thing that made it work in the first place. Over twenty years, the brand has expanded to freestanding stores, dozens of countries, and more than a thousand hotel and amenity partnerships worldwide, all while keeping its manufacturing close to home in the New York area and its product assortment deliberately tight.

Malin and Goetz have both said the hardest part of running the business has never been coming up with new ideas. It’s saying no to them. In an industry that rewards constant novelty, they’ve built something durable by doing the opposite: identifying what actually works, refining it, and resisting the urge to add for the sake of adding.

That discipline is exactly what makes MALIN+GOETZ such a natural fit for anyone building a smarter, more intentional routine. It’s a brand that trusts its customer to know that effective doesn’t have to mean elaborate, and that a few well-made products, used consistently, will always outperform a shelf full of promises. Two decades in, that idea hasn’t just held up. It’s more relevant than ever.

MALIN+GOETZ in Your Fall 2026 Box

This fall, that same philosophy is showing up right in your box. Eau De Parfum in Bergamot and Eau De Parfum in Dark Rum are both available as customization choices in the Fall 2026 Box, giving members a chance to try the two scents that best capture the brand’s “dualities in balance” approach: Bergamot’s bright, elegant citrus and Dark Rum’s warm, boozy depth.

MALIN+GOETZ is also taking over our Fall 2026 Men’s Box with a full lineup that reads like a greatest hits of their most essential products. The Eucalyptus Deodorant is the brand’s aluminum-free, baking soda-free bestseller, years in the making and proof that clean deodorant can actually work, with a crisp, cooling scent that never tips into medicinal. The Grapefruit Face Cleanser is one of the original six products the brand launched with in 2004 and still its most iconic, a gentle, sulfate-free formula that purifies without stripping. The Peppermint Shampoo is a clarifying, invigorating cleanse built on the same less-is-more logic as everything else in the line, delivering a genuine cooling tingle without weighing hair down, while the Cilantro Conditioner rounds it out with a lightweight detangle and an unexpected, herbal green scent. The Eucalyptus Hand + Body Wash carries the same eucalyptus note as the deodorant, so the whole routine feels intentionally layered rather than randomly assembled. And the Vitamin E Face Moisturizer, alongside the Grapefruit Cleanser, is the other half of MALIN+GOETZ’s founding two-step regimen, lightweight but genuinely hydrating, and the one Matthew Malin still uses on his own sensitive skin.

Six products, one philosophy: skincare and grooming that works hard without asking you to think hard. It’s the same idea Malin and Goetz had in that small Chelsea apartment over twenty years ago, now showing up in your FFF Box!

Some of the best beauty ideas really are the simple ones.
