Everyone has that one friend who can seemingly eat whatever she wants and not gain a pound. (That lucky bitch!) And then there’s us…For many of us, it seems that if we just so much as look at a cheeseburger, we gain 10 pounds. Not cool. On the plus side, there’s something we can do about it. Here are my top three tips to speed up your metabolism and burn calories faster:
Be a Beef Cake
Are your workouts 100% cardio? Well, lose the treadmill and hit the weights, girl! Building muscle tone and lean muscle mass can help to speed up your metabolism. According to WebMD, adding just 5-10 pound of lean muscle mass can jumpstart your resting metabolism, or the number of calories your body burns to stay alive, by approximately 100 calories.
Count Some Sheep
Make sure you get enough sleep at night. If you’re watching the Late Late Show every night and waking up at 7 a.m. every day, chances are your metabolism will slow down. In fact, WebMD states that skimping on your Zs can decrease the number of calories your body burns when it’s at rest, and your resting metabolism makes up 60%-75% of the total calories you burn in a day. Hit the sack!
I know, I know. This one surprised you. But I don’t mean that you should eat a larger quantity of food, I just mean you should eat smaller meals more frequently. (And keep those meals healthy!) If you eat three large meals per day, your blood sugar will spike and crash throughout the day. If you eat five small meals every couple of hours, your blood sugar will remain more steady and you will be stimulating your metabolism more consistently.
