Women We Admire: Kristi Yamaguchi
Our Fave Gold Medalist Skates Her Way Into Our Hearts
When we were young we went to the ice skating rink and watched the older girls skate with grace, beauty, speed and athleticism. It was then that we made a very important decision in our lives…to take up ping pong (no death spirals in table tennis!).
Lucky for us, Kristi Yamaguchi, America’s quintessential ice princess (and newest workout guru, with a fab new Power Workout DVD), made no such decision. FabFitFun chatted with the gold-medal-winning superstar about staying in shape, setting a beauty routine, and craving Taco Bell.
What did it feel like to win a gold medal?
It was exhilarating, unbelievable, a relief, and a proud moment.
Do your daughters ice skate? Any future gold medalists?
They are in group lessons now and just starting to learn. I don’t see them ever competing, but who knows? They like it for fun.
What is your best piece of advice for young athletes?
Set goals for yourself, stay on track for those goals. Work hard and keep believing.
What was it like competing on Dancing with the Stars? Do you still dance?
It was a ton of fun and very exhausting, too. I don’t get to dance very often. I do miss it.
What jams get your blood flowing for a
workout?
“Beautiful Day” by U2, anything Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, Rob Thomas.
What’s your favorite way to burn calories?
Going on a walk around
our neighborhood with the kids. There are lots of hills around us.
What’s your go-to healthy snack?
Fresh fruits like apples, blueberries, yogurt, and nuts.
What is one food you wish had zero calories?
French fries.
What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without?
Kiehl’s #1 lip
balm.
If you weren’t a gold-medal-winning ice skater what would you want to do for work?
Have my own children’s boutique.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Taco Bell.
Who is your celebrity crush (we won’t tell…ok we will…but tell us anyway)?
Jake Gyllenhaal.
What’s your favorite way to relieve stress?
Get a massage.
Who do you most look up to and why? How has this person inspired
you?
My own mother. She has done an amazing job raising me and my siblings and I value her opinions. Now being a mother myself, I can only hope to be the mother that she is.
