Definitely not your grandmother's lipstick
A great lipstick can either make (think Kate Moss) or break (Suri Cruise does not need lipstick!) your look; and who can deny a classic vampy red, a subtle nude, or even a sheer pink lip? But let’s face it, a monotonous beauty routine can be a total snoozefest.
It’s likely you’re already aware that color is all the rage this season. So why not take a cue from this season’s coveted “pop of color” and put it on your lips! But brace yourselves, because when we say “color,” we are talking serious color (think tangerine orange, dragon fruit fuchsia, and watermelon pink).
OK, we know what you’re thinking: “The only time I wear bright lipstick is to attend either bad ’80s theme parties or NKOTBSB concerts,” and, “only edgy celebs like Rihanna and Nicki Minaj can pull off such an insanely cool trend.”
Nice try ladies, but this couldn’t be further from the truth! And who better to guide us on rocking this fun trend (but in a classy 2012 way, of course) than professional makeup artist Joanna Schlip. She’s worked with Ellen Pompeo, Christina Applegate, and Eva Longoria, just to name a few!
Joanna said simplicity is essential on the rest of your face when wearing a bright lip. Anything neutral will work on your eyes — a beautiful gold, a sexy espresso, or a soft taupe shadow (Physician’s Formula is her fave drugstore brand) will look amazing, while blush can range from a light peach to a subtle purple (just make sure it complements your skin tone). Try to keep eyeliner close to your lids (remember, we’re going for minimal), but feel free to define your brows.
Once you’ve nailed these basics and are looking completely fresh-faced and gorge, add your bright lip (we like Sephora + Pantone Universe Lipgloss in Tangerine Tango, Wet ’n Wild MegaLast Lipcolor in Don’t Blink Pink, and NARS Lipstick in Funny Face). Ta-da! You have officially achieved a look that will rival that of Lea Michele! Now, if we could only figure out how to mimic her voice…
