Thirsty Thursday: Electoral Cocktails
Drinks agreed upon by both sides of the aisle
The ballots are in and you know what that means…it’s def time for a drink! Celebrate the closing of the campaign trail and the end of political advertisements (finally!) with an electoral cocktail — or mocktail, for the under 21 voters.
Even if we didn’t spend all day lobbying for education reform, we can still unwind with The Lobbyist Martini (hey, we had a stressful day too!). While we don’t recommend downing one of these gin-based cocktails and pitching your boss on why you deserve a raise, we do support sipping one while catching up on current events (aka watching Chelsea Lately).
The Lobbyist Martini
1 1/2 ounces gin
1 1/2 ounces vermouth
1 dash orange bitters
1 dash lemon bitters
Polar Ruby Red Grapefruit Seltzer
Directions: Shake with ice, strain into a martini glass. Top with Polar Seltzer.
We all know Barack likes to kick back with a cold beer, but we think he would approve of this Barockin’ Shandy, made with bourbon, pure maple syrup, Polar Butter Rum Seltzer and Barack’s fave Honey Brown Ale.
2 tablespoons bourbon (such as Maker’s Mark)
1 teaspoon pure maple syrup
Polar Butter Rum Seltzer
Directions: Add maple syrup and bourbon into a cocktail shaker and combine vigorously. Pour into a double old fashion glass, top with equal parts beer and seltzer.
Michelle might steer clear of soda and saturated fats, but this first lady deserves to celebrate with an Obama’rita! Fresh squeezed juices and seltzer make this an Obama-approved option.
1 part Patron Tequila
1 part Cointreau
1 part pineapple juice
1 part freshly squeezed lime juice
Pinch sea salt
Polar Raspberry-Lime Seltzer
Fresh pineapple, garnish
Directions: Combine all of the ingredients, other than the seltzer in a cocktail shaker with crushed ice. Shake vigorously, until it shows condensation. Pour into glass. Top with Polar Seltzer, garnish with skewered pineapple.
And while Mitt may avoid the aforementioned alcoholic beverages, he’s going to need something to comfort him. Mitt, may we suggest the Mint Romney — a delicious combination of chocolate syrup, cream, mint and Polar Mint Chocolate Seltzer?
Splash of Cream
Polar Mint Chocolate Seltzer
Sprig of mint, as garnish
Directions: In a cocktail shaker combine the cream and the chocolate syrup with ice. Shake vigorously, and then pour into a glass. Top generously with Polar Mint Chocolate Seltzer. Stir gently. Garnish with mint.
The Electoral College has done its job and whether you’re celebrating or wallowing, mix up an electoral cocktail and be thankful we made it through this whole piece without making a Big Bird joke (oops, does that count?).
