The Games People Play
Movie tickets: $26. Dinner for two: $80. After dinner drinks: $50. The cost of dating in 2011: ridiculous!
It’s enough to make grown women…throw a party.
As going out becomes more and more expensive, people are staying home with friends to play adult games (and by adult games we don’t mean Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver shacking up in The Ice Storm…although it’s on our Netflix queue).
Anyway, here are a few of our favorite grown-up games sure to get the party started:
Cranium: Test the size of your brain with this party game that features 14 silly but challenging activities. Your team will hum, sketch, sculpt, act, answer trivia and spell backwards to find success. Can you make a telephone out of clay? Hum “Blue Suede Shoes?” Act like Martha Stewart? The game tests a variety of skills so that everyone has a chance to shine and fail hilariously.
Apples to Apples: Based on outrageous analogies and comparisons, this award-winning game involves quick thinking, strategy, and lots of laughter. The judge deals a noun and then each player has to choose an adjective from another stack of cards to describe it. The fun comes with creating and politicking for your choices…for example, someone might pair “ancient” with “Rome,” “mummies,” or “Larry King.” If the judge picks your card, you win that round. And everyone gets a chance to be the judge.
Taboo: The concept is simple. You have to get your teammates to guess your word without using the key words listed on your card. How do you describe a diamond without using the words baseball, ring, carats, jewel or engagement? The result is hilarious, often embarrassing, but always fun. Quick thinking and knowing your teammates is the key to winning the game. We used steroids for diamond and someone somehow made the connection.
Electronic Catch Phrase: This addictive little game can be played just about anywhere. Just like the classic board game, players must get their teammates to guess the word that flashes across the screen. You’ll need speed as the team who guesses the most right words wins the game. Bring it anywhere, and try not to annoy strangers who might wonder why you’re making monkey noises to get your teammates to guess “banana.” Or, maybe just ask them to play.
