Ask G: Fall’s Perfect Pout
The best lipsticks, pencils, and glosses this season
Dear G, I’ve traded my bright sundresses for dark blazers and neutral scarves, but now my lips look all out of place. Can you help me get my lips in line? Paige
Some girls match their lipstick to their ensemble, some match it to their boyfriend’s outfit, and others match their pucker to Dianna Agron’s tights. And while it may have been a bold, risky choice for Amanda Seyfried to pair her plum lipstick with a red pant suit at the Miu Miu show, the look was successful and screams fall 2012!
Yep, cooler weather equals darker, richer colors, and fab smoldering makeup looks. And one of my favorite ways to transition from beachside babe to fireside fox is with a sexy seasonal smooch (OK, enough with the autumn alliteration…seriously.)
I know it can be overwhelming to go searching in stores for the right shade. You start with one swipe and next thing you know, you leave with the back of your hand looking like a kid’s art project.
So Paige, if you want to revamp that pout, here are my picks for this season’s best lipsticks, glosses, stains, and pencils that are perfect for your fall ensembles. Because guess what, your pumpkin spice latte just isn’t the same without an oxblood lip stain on the rim! (And your hubby’s cheek looks better with it too…Just ask Bill!)
Diorific Longwearing True Color Lipstick in Soft Red, $36: Our second favorite Christian (only behind Christian Grey of course) has released a super sophisticated limited edition shade. With a vintage-inspired gold case, this lipstick is ladylike and long-lasting. Yep, it’ll even last through your makeout sesh with Mr. Grey!
Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Fig Jam, $7.49: The results are in and the color of the season is oxblood. Don’t let your wardrobe take on the trend alone — lips can dare to go dark too! I’m obsessed with these lip butters because you can build up the color or keep it sheer.
Rimmel London Lasting Finish Matte by Kate Moss 101, $11.95: Dying to try out the matte lip trend that has been all over the runways? With the help of supermodel Kate Moss, I’m giving up my gloss for this ultra glam shade of pale pink. A classic pink pout is the perfect way to master the matte look!
Bare Minerals 100% Natural Lip Color in Plum Brûlée, $15: When something is 100% natural and 100% glam, that’s what you call “plum perfect.” And that’s exactly what this little stick is. Pop the rich color on your pout to vamp up your look!
L’Oreal Project Runway Colour Riche Le Gloss in Queen Shine $7.95:
L’Oreal teaming up with Project Runway to bring us fall’s hottest looks? Amazeballs. This deep, rich, berry shade is incredibly glossy and totally “in” — even by Heidi’s standards. In the words of Tim Gunn, “Make it work!”
Bite Beauty High Pigment Matte Pencil in Zinfandel, $24: Packed with as much resveratrol, the super anti-aging antioxidant, as five glasses of red wine, this new lip pencil is simply a must! Nothing beats the color of the electric coral shade. Add a little mascara and voilà, instant fab!
MAC Vegas Volt, $15: Go glam without the glitter. This shimmer-free lipstick complements most skin tones and adds a spot of brightness during darker days. Its slight vanilla scent will have you tasting as good as you smell!
Blast Flipstick Lipstick Color in Cheeky, $7.99: I’m always a sucker for a two-in-one! With Covergirl’s new double-ended lip color you get two great colors — one shimmery shade and one in a velvety finish. Layered or alone, I love this pretty pink duo that gives me an excuse to get “Cheeky!”
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Marion, $16: Far from a lip gloss or any other lip color I’ve tried before, Lip Tar is not for the faint of heart. The new dirty rose hue is the perfect neutral. Just beware – there is nothing sheer here, expect a totally opaque color that lasts.
Revlon Creme Lipstick in Black Cherry, $7.99: The classic cherry red has taken a dark, romantic turn for fall. Creamy and smooth with built-in moisturizers, this lipstick may feel like a million bucks, but it definitely doesn’t cost it. A total beauty bargain with bold berry hues, this shade works (and lasts!) for day and night.
