The Perfect Fit
Finding the perfect bra doesn't have to be a pain in the neck
Want the secret to looking better and feeling more comfortable in mere minutes?
It’s your bra. According to the experts in boobology, chances are you are wearing the wrong size. We chatted with the renowned bra aficionado and author of the forthcoming book Busted! The Fab Foundations Guide to Bras That Fit, Flatter and Feel Fantastic, Ali Cudby, about the secrets to finding the perfect bra.
Cudby said the right bra can “improve your looks and your health in one afternoon,” so check out her simple tips for finding the right bra and looking your best.
You Don’t Have a Bra Size: There are few standards for size in the bra industry, so even if you know your size in one bra, it may be different in another brand. To find the best bra for your body, focus on fit, not size.
You’re With the Band: You want the band to do 80%-90% of the work of carrying your breasts. Make sure the band is snug enough that you can only pull it away from your back by an inch or, at most, two.
Bridge the Gap: The bridge is the piece of the bra between the breasts, connecting the cups. In an underwire bra, it should sit flat against your ribcage with no gapping, even when you raise your arms over your head.
Don’t Let Your Cup Runneth Over: The cups should fully encase your breast tissue. Make sure all of it is in the cup — no quadboob (the cup cutting a line into the middle of your breasts) or underspill (breasts slipping beneath the bottom of the cup). Similarly, don’t wear a too-big cup with wrinkles or puckers in the fabric.
Strap In: Make sure the straps are firm enough to hold everything in place, but are not doing any heavy lifting. They shouldn’t gap or feel loose, and they should never make red marks on your skin. Readjust your straps every day. Yes, it’s a pain in the neck, but it will prevent you from getting a pain in your neck.
