Sally Hershberger Gives the Inside Scoop on Red Carpet Hair
Everything old is new again. Hawaii Five-O, the Packers, cupcakes, Steven Tyler’s career, Roller Derby, and of course, glamorous, vamped-up Hollywood hairdos.
With the Academy Awards just around the corner, we sat down with hair guru Sally Hershberger of the gorgeous new Style Studio in Ciel Spa at the SLS Hotel to get her thoughts on Oscar hair and how to get a glammed-up look all year long!
What do you think the big red carpet hairstyles will be?
The styles will have a lot of flow and movement – nothing severe or stiff looking. You will see a lot of loose, layered waves, soft, sophisticated updos and looks modeled after vintage Hollywood glamour.
Do you prefer event hair up or down?
I’m not a fan of prom-esque updos. However, the hair and the outfit should complement each other. If the dress is embellished, I prefer hair undone and natural. For a simpler dress with cleaner lines, there is more room to experiment with an updo or hair accessories. In general, I love hair down. Right now, big, wavy looks are very in – the bigger the better.
What is your favorite new product?
My new Plump Up is genius. It’s a daily restorative thickening mist that provides hair with fullness and nourishment for a healthier, bouncier and softer style.
What do you think about the Keratin/Brazilian blowouts?
I am a big fan of Keratin treatments. They are not only safe and formaldehyde-free, but they also improve the quality of hair.
We are ALWAYS short on time! Can you give us a few easy hair tips to help a girl on the go who still wants to look fab?
One of my favorite and super easy tricks, which doesn’t involve a blow dryer or curling iron, is my wavy hair clip trick: When the hair is damp, apply my SALON by Sally Hershberger Mineral Spray throughout the hair. The problem with most texture sprays is they have salt that dries the hair and dulls the color. So I discovered that if you get rid of the salt and, instead, infuse the hair with natural moisturizers and earth minerals, you get incredible movement, shape, and brilliance. Next, wrap 1-inch sections of your hair around your fingers and secure with a butterfly clip. Let the hair air dry, and when you take the clips out you will have insane waves. Then work my SALON by Sally Hershberger Mineral Cream into the hair to smooth fly-aways. I like to twist and twirl the strands – especially around the face, for a gorgeous, quick and easy style. You’ll be out of the door with fabulous hair in no time.
How often should we really wash our hair?
It really depends on your hair type. For people with hair on the oilier side, I recommend washing daily and be sure to limit the amount of conditioner you use. For people with dry, frizzy hair, it’s better to wash your hair every 3-4 days. This gives hair enough time to get its natural oils back.
What is the best way to fight frizz?
The best way to fight frizz is to deep condition the hair. You can do this at the salon or at home. A great trick is to rinse hair with club soda – the bubbles help to tame frizz. Applying a wax-like cream also helps to fight frizzy hair and smooth out fly-aways.
Any tips for girls with curls?
Avoid blunt cuts, you don’t want all your curls to sit at one point. Shorter layers are also tricky because they can leave gaps in the style which then creates an uneven shape overall. Cutting longer layers in curly hair will prevent this clumping effect and can make curls more manageable.
Do you have a favorite hair straightener on the market?

What is the hottest cut for spring?
Spring is when you start to see a lot of women growing out their hair in anticipation of transitioning to summer. But everyone loves the long beachy layered cut. It is fresh and fun for spring and will always be sexy because the layers look amazing on all hair lengths and can be tailored to any face shape. They are flattering on everyone, which never goes out of style.
