NYFW: New Week, New Rules
Monday’s runways play with decades past
Carolina Herrera, whose designs are known for their balance between classicism and femininity, definitely did not disappoint this year! Having found inspiration from an original musical piece composed by Tom Hodge, Herrera’s Fall 2013 collection started off soft, with flowy skirts and dresses accentuated by rich fur. She then brought in some serious drama with floral prints and deep plum, berry, and red colors before finishing up with a more subtle palette, featuring cream, beige, and gold. Herrera’s clear understanding of how to accentuate the female form makes this collection one that’s totally lust-worthy!
One of Monday’s most anticipated shows was Donna Karan’s DKNY collection. The looks were inspired by her late husband, Stephan Weiss, who she said always helped her “sculpt the body with expression” in her collections. The show focused on incorporating classic but simple basics into your wardrobe. A jersey shift dress paired with a cape, suit jacket, or scarf that can be dressed up or down for any occasion. DKNY is known for its pieces that transition easily and are perfect for the working girl — this runway collection was no exception.
Betsey Johnson has made a name for herself in the fashion industry with her over-the-top, exuberant designs, and her Fall runway show certainly proved to be a celebration of her free spirit! With a collection that focused primarily on workout gear, Betsey’s models hit the runway with flair, participating in a workout routine that included using champagne bottles as free weights, tights as stretching bands, and sneakers as gloves. BJ’s designs had a definite ’90s vibe and featured bright colors, patterns, and logos. Her collection may not be for the average girl, but we can’t help but admire Betsey’s attitude!
While Marc Jacobs’ collection show was supposed to run Monday night, a blizzard snafu kept his fabrics overseas. Marc’s audience still clamored around the runway to preview his ’70s-inspired Marc by Marc Jacobs collection that ran in the timeslot instead. This collection danced us back to one of Marc Jacobs’ fave decades, with turtlenecks tucked, high-waisted pants, low-hemmed dresses with bold retro prints, and even perms gracing the runway. Looks like ’70s office chic is back for 2013.
