The Monday Breakdown
We break down the top headlines from the weekend
In the News…
Who run the (tennis) world?
Serena Williams won the US Open women’s final on Sunday, defeating number one-ranked Victoria Azarenka. The tennis champ was in disbelief after her hard-fought win, running straight into the arms of her mom and sister Venus to celebrate. Everyone together now, awwwww.
It’s Apple Season
After sending out not-so-cryptic invites for a special Sept. 12 event, Apple has everyone holding their breath for an iPhone 5 reveal. Rumors are swirling with suggestions that a new iPad mini could be revealed at the same event, but we’ll all have to wait until Wednesday to find out.
A Grim Anniversary
The foundation completing the 9/11 memorial in New York City has estimated that the $700 million project will cost nearly $60 million a year to operate. The high cost has raised eyebrows and delayed construction as behind-the-scenes financial disputes continue. Tuesday marks the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
A Presidential Pick-Me-Up
The RNC and DNC have closed up shop and the campaigns have hit the road. On Sunday, Mitt Romney stopped by Meet the Press where he answered some hard-hitting questions and said he would keep some parts of President Obama’s health care reform if he were elected. Meanwhile, the president took his campaign to Florida where he made an unannounced stop at Big Apple Pizza. The shop owner couldn’t control his excitement at having Obama in for dinner and scooped him up in a bear hug. Did the Secret Service see that?
Liberty Ross is moving on and she’s doing it in haute couture. Rupert Sanders’ estranged wife surprised everyone at Fashion Week by walking the Alexander Wang show on Saturday. Kristen who?
How I Met…My Wife?
Another weekend, another celebrity wedding. This time it was How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders and SNL cast member Taran Killam. The two have been engaged for three years and have a 3-year-old daughter.
