Your Pee and Your Health

by  |

Unless you just gulped down a huge cup of coffee with a side of asparagus, you probably don’t notice your pee too much. But because pee helps to usher out some of the wastes inside your body, it can be an indicator that maybe it’s time to make a trip to your doctor’s office.

Stale-Smelling Pee
We’re not saying pee should smell like daisies, but if it smells decidedly old, off, or even like ammonia, the smell can set off the danger bells that you may have a urinary tract infection (UTI). Double or nothing, you have one if it burns when you pee. If your pee smells sweet or almost fruity, this can mean you have ketones, substances that are released when your body uses fat for energy. Since these are a diabetes indicator, get thee to the doctor.

Color Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes
Pee should be pale yellow, like straw, which indicates you are drinking enough water to keep your kidneys happy and your body running. If it’s dark, drink more water. Meds and foods you eat can turn your pee all sorts of interesting colors, including red, blue, and green. But if you aren’t taking or eating anything new, see your doc.

You Can’t Stop Going
The average woman pees about six to eight times per day, according to WebMD. If you are peeing more and you aren’t drinking more, you could have anything from an overactive bladder to a UTI.
