Protect Yourself

by  |

Sure, sunscreen isn’t as fun as lipstick and eye shadow. (When was the last time a star got asked what sunscreen she was wearing on the red carpet?) But like it or not, it is the most important thing in your beauty regimen. With so many different formulas and so many numbers, it’s hard to know exactly what to choose. So we decided to call up Dr. Howard Murad, our fave dermatologist, to give us the spiel on sunscreen.

Is sunscreen really necessary all year long?
Most people don’t realize that sun damage occurs during daily activities, even indoors and during the winter. (It’s not just for the beach, ladies!). For maximum protection, make sure your SPF contains protection from both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays), antioxidants to neutralize aging free radicals, anti-inflammatory agents to soothe and prevent redness and hydrating ingredients to replace moisture lost to sun exposure. I recommend using a minimum of SPF 15 every day.

What do all those numbers mean (SPF 30, SPF 50, etc.)?
The sun protection factor (SPF) system measures the length of time a sunscreen will protect your skin from burning due to UVB ray exposure, compared to how long your skin would take to burn without sunscreen protection. If it takes 20 minutes without sunscreen for your skin to become reddish and start to burn, using a sunscreen with an SPF 15 should prevent the burning of the skin 15 times longer.

Is there a science to applying the right amount?
For each sunscreen application it’s important to apply one ounce of sunscreen (equal to a shot glass) to the entire body and face daily, and continuously reapply when out in the sun for long periods of time. If you plan on swimming or being in water, apply water resistant sunscreen every 40 to 80 minutes for optimal protection.

Anything else?
Consider taking supplements with pomegranate extract which provides you with powerful antioxidant protection against free radical damage, which accounts for more than 80% of the signs of premature aging. We did a study that showed that ingesting pomegranate extract can even boost the effective SPF of sunscreens your body’s natural SPF.
