Makeup Mixology

Quick show of hands for those who enjoyed studying chemistry. Bueller? Bueller?

But it’s unfortunate, really, because who knew compounding could be so damn…exciting? That is, when we’re talking about makeup. (And come on — when are we not?)

Seriously, have you ever bought a product because it looked totes amaze on the model (cough, Kate Upton) in the magazine only to be met with major disappointment once you realized it hardly looked the same on you? We know, right? Life is so unfair.

But, it got us thinking: What do these annoying babes with the flawless faces know that we don’t? And then we were hit with a stroke of genius (per usual). Why not ask the makeup masters themselves, those responsible for creating such effortlessly glam looks?

Yep, we consulted three top makeup artists and persuaded them to divulge their super secret recipes for creating the perfect makeup mixtures. But don’t go getting all hot and bothered on us just yet ladies, because you definitely don’t need to be a competent chemist to skillfully execute these beauty equations.

20130507_makeupmixology_liner_thumb Natural-Looking Lip Liner: Celebrity makeup artist Troy Jensen loves a natural-looking lip that’s soft yet distinct. The trick: Jensen dips Clinique Quickliner into a cream moisturizer (such as Clinique Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator) for an extra sheer application. If you’re looking for even more precision, Jensen suggests overlaying the final result with a nude, pink, or raspberry-colored Clinique Chubby Stick.

20130507_makeupmixology_pout_thumb A Pretty Pout: “Reds and nudes are really hot right now,” said Los Angeles-based makeup artist Joanna Schlip. For the perfect nude lip, try mixing MAC Lipstick in Blankety (“It looks good on everyone,” she said) with Dior Crème de Rose Smoothing Plumping Lip Balm. “It gives the lipstick texture, but makes it much more sheer.”

20130507_makeupmixology_sparklingface_thumb Perfectly Sparkling Skin: For natural-looking yet radiant skin, Jensen opts for a dime-sized amount of Jouer Luminizing Body Glow, blended with a great body lotion, such as CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion . “I like to give my clients a healthy glow without looking too shimmery.”

20130507_makeupmixology_blush_thumb Beautiful Blush: To get a gorgeous but natural-looking glow, Schlip creates her own insanely uh-mazing cheek formula. It’s simple: Combine Stila Convertible Color with Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer and you’ve got yourself a healthy cheek with a super sheer hint of color.

20130507_makeupmixology_everlastingeyeshadow_thumb Everlasting Eye Shadow: To create a shadow with stellar stamina, LA celebrity makeup artist Kimberley Bosso recommended layering Stila Prime Pot eye shadow primer over a smidge of Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. “This formula is idiot-proof and always gives eye shadow great staying power,” Bosso said. Just be sure to use a light touch: “Not too much (foundation) or the eye shadow will crease.”

20130507_makeupmixology_flawlessface_thumb A Flawless Face: Get a natural sun-kissed glow without going overboard: “Revlon ColorStay Foundation really lasts,” Jensen said, who mixes a medium color (such as Toast) with AnneMarie Borlind Orange Blossom Energizer. “It creates a glow, but dilutes it so it still looks natural, almost as if you’re not wearing any foundation.”
