erotica Novel 50 shades of grey takes over best sellers list

How Did the 50 Shades Of Grey Trilogy Take Over The NYT Best Sellers List?

by  |

By now, you’ve probably heard of the “mommy porn” erotica novel 50 Shades of Grey by E.L. James; you might even own a copy. What started as not so innocent Twilight fanfiction has become a bona fide literary phenomenon.

What’s notable about the book isn’t its popularity, but rather the insane level of overnight popularity it achieved in a matter of months. The novel debuted at the top of the New York Times Best Sellers list nine weeks ago and hasn’t moved an inch. Not only that, but the two sequels, 50 Shades Darker and 50 Shades Freed, have since taken over spots two and three. So how did a cheesy Twilight spinoff about sex, BDSM, and sadism take over the best sellers list?

In a word: e-books. Yes, the e-book has become a brown paper bag of sorts for erotica fans. No more trips to the sketchy adult book store or awkward stares at Barnes & Noble. Across the country, literally millions of women are surreptitiously reading porn on their tablet computers.

When doomsayers said that e-books and tablets would change the publishing world for good, we don’t think this is what they had in mind.

Have you read 50 Shades of Grey?
