Tomorrow is the celebration of one of our favorite things on earth (no, it’s not Channing’s birthday) it’s National Almond Day!

Yup, the little powerhouse nut is finally getting the recognition it deserves! We know that when it’s halfway through the day, we’re about to hit the gym, and our energy is dragging, we can always count on almonds to have our back. In case you’ve been totally ignoring the super snack, here’s a recap of the reasons you should be popping almonds:

1. They lower cholesterol!
Almonds are naturally cholesterol-free and contain 13 grams of unsaturated fat (the good guys!).

2. They protect your heart!
Some studies suggest that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as almonds, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.

3. They’re a quick energy boost!
Almonds contain 6 grams of protein per serving, 3.5 grams of fiber, and are the tree nut highest in calcium, vitamin E, riboflavin, and niacin.

4. They’re delicious!
Whether you roast raw almonds (they’ll smell like popcorn, how weird is that?), crush them and add them to your yogurt, or drink a glass of almond milk each morning, you’ve got to admit: those suckers are tasty!

P.S. Here’s an almondlicious (hey, it’s totally OK to make up words on a national holiday) recipe for Orange Almond Cilantro. Try it on top of grilled or broiled fish, chicken, pork, beef, quesadillas, or just with tortilla chips — Yum!

Orange Almond Cilantro Salsa

servings 8

1/3 cup fresh orange juice
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
3/4 cup (3 ounces) slivered almonds, roasted*
1 cup tightly packed cilantro leaves, washed and dried
1 jalapeño, seeded
2 cloves garlic, peeled
Salt to taste
Cilantro leaves to garnish

Place orange juice, lime juice, almonds, cilantro, jalapeño, and garlic in the bowl of a food processor or blender and process until very finely chopped. Season to taste with salt. Garnish with more cilantro leaves. Serve immediately or store covered and refrigerated up to one day. Serve chilled.

* To roast almonds, place a single layer on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring at least once to ensure even roasting. Almonds will continue to brown after being removed from the oven.
